Syndi Anderson  
Syndi is working on her PhD at Colorado State University, focusing on renewable and alternative energies for developing world applications. Ms. Anderson has had 4 years experience researching and applying solar energy technology.  In 1992, Syndi, with a multinational team, did research on solar powered solid state lasers at the Wiesmann Institute of Science.  While at the Science Institute, Syndi was introduced to the global nature of the lack of application of renewable energy sources in less industrialized nations. After starting her bachelor’s degree at Utah State University, Syndi completed her degree in mechanical engineering at BYU, where she was able to do undergraduate research on coal fly ash from pulverized coal/methane boosted reactors.
 

Dean Simpson  
I am a Senior in Mechanical Engineering and started my employment at the EECL in April of 2006. I am currently researching ignition concept designs on a prechambered large bore natural gas compressor and will continue my research as a graduate student. I am from Hudson, Colorado.  Before working at the EECL, I worked on a farm in Roggen, Colorado.
 

Mike Buehner  
I am working on a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. My recent Ph.D. research has been in automated control systems, and I currently working for Solix to develop the dynamic system models and automated control strategies for the various photobioreactors. My prior research has been in digital signal processing, communication systems, adaptive controls, and robust controls. I received both my BS and MS degrees from CSU and plan to stay in Ft. Collins as long as possible. In my spare time, I like to travel, go see live music, hang out with friends, go hiking and backpacking, sleep, and play guitar.
 

Melanie Sloan  
Melanie Sloan is a first year Graduate student.  Her undergraduate degree is in Economics, which she utilized in the first part of her career working in the energy markets division of Xcel Energy.  Leveraging this experience, she is now working with the biomass cookstove team in their research and development of an efficient, affordable and marketable combustion chamber.  Originally from Massachusetts, she has lived in Colorado for 10 years, enjoying all that Colorado has to offer:  kayaking, backpacking, hiking, camping, skiing and biking.
 

Sachin Joshi  
I am working towards my PhD in Laser Ignition of Natural Gas Engines. I am involved in international development work in wood cookstoves through Global Innovation Centre. I was born in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. I help to run a non-profit NGO and private company for RETs dissemination in Nepal. I enjoy outdoors especially hiking in the mountains.
 

Sule Amadu  
I am a first year graduate student, currently working on the 3-way Catalyst Testing of Natural Gas Engines. I was born in Bolgatanga , Ghana. I have a BS in Mathematics and Statistics from the University Of Cape Coast, Ghana. I worked with the following; America Peace Corps (Ghana), Ghana Education Service, Ghana Statistical Service and Makita Tools (United Kingdom). I enjoy playing scrabble, soccer, basketball and cooking.
 

Dan Lionberg  
I am at CSU to earn my MSME degree, and am presently splitting my focus between classical energy conversion systems and structural optimization. I have particular interest in energy technologies that have immediate and practical application to the world's developing areas. I am enthusiastically working on the Global Innovation Center's wood cook stoves project, which has prospects of being extremely beneficial to a very large number of people. I feel very lucky to have found the EECL, which has a unique and progressive vision. Outside of engineering, I enjoy competitive road/track/MTB cycling, backcountry hiking, and listening to & making music. Colorado is a great place to do all of these things!
 

Marty Malenshek  
Upon graduating from the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy in 2002, I became a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Marine Engineer.  I have spent the last four years working on merchant ships (oil tankers, container ships, etc.).  The lifestyle of a merchant seaman allowed me to travel to all corners of the world, and take some unforgettable trips to Cuba, Costa Rica, and the Bahamas.  Needing a break from the sailor's life, I came to the EECL because it provides the perfect environment to build on my operational experience, while challenging me to further my knowledge and skills.   I work on the Alternative Gaseous Fuel project, under Dr. Daniel Olsen.
 

Brett Wilson  

A proud Hokie and graduate of Virginia Tech, I grew up outside Charlottesville, VA. During college I took an internship with Honda R&D Americas and a co-op with The Robert Bosch Corporation. After graduating from VT in 2006 I took a job with Cummins, Inc. as a High Horsepower Service Engineer. This position allowed me to travel (CO, NM, PA, SC, UT,
WV, WY etc) and see a variety of engines in operation. I was responsible for a wide range of applications: from 175 hp natural gas wellhead compressors to 3500 hp mining haul trucks. It was through the Cummins sponsored gas composition research that learned about the EECL. Here I am working on alternative fuels composition research under Dr. Dan Olsen.

Outside of class I have a love of the outdoors, college football and brewing my own beer and wine.

 

Christian L’Orange  

I have been working at the EECL since the fall of 2006 with the majority of my time being devoted to work in the Global Innovations Center and testing of clean burning cookstoves.  I will be graduating in the Spring of 2008 with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering and will be staying at CSU to complete my masters degree.  With the free time I have from work and school I spend most of my time in the mountains surrounding Fort Collins.

 

Solomon Otim  

I am currently in the second year of my masters in mechanical engineering at Colorado State University.  During my first year of graduate school, I was a graduate teaching assistant for Machine Dynamics and Heat and Mass Transfer.  After talking with Dr. Olsen, I joined the EECL in March 2007.  I am currently investigating the effects of a fuel and oil additive on engine performance and emissions reduction, under Dr. Olsen.    

Born in Uganda, I spent my early childhood living in Uganda and Liverpool, England before moving to Ithaca, New York where I grew up.  I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Rochester. As an undergraduate, I have worked at the Ithaca City Department of Public Works, Cornell University, and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics.  I am the vice president of the CSU NSBE chapter and the secretary of the CSU SHPE chapter. My interests include basketball, weightlifting, science, traveling and enjoying the outdoors. 

 

Patrick Flynn  

I am working towards a dual Master’s in Agricultural & Resource Economics and Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise.  My research focus is finding avenues for biodiesel producers to benefit from emerging carbon markets around the world.  Previous to working at the EECL, I spent seven years developing and implementing clean cook stove, reforestation and agroforestry projects in Latin America.  I have a BS from CSU’s Warner College of Natural Resources.  When not studying my interests include organic gardening, cycling, hiking, backpacking, and reading.

 

Collin Joseph Horvat  

I began working for Solix Biofuels in fall of 2007 as a Mechanical Engineering Masters student. My interest in renewable and clean energy brought me to CSU and more specifically the EECL. I received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. I am very proud to be apart of the EECL and Solix, and help contribute to the phenomenal work being done. I spend my free time living the dream and climbing boulders.

 

Josh Schmitt  
I am a graduate in the Mechanical Engineering program at CSU and have been working at the lab since the summer of 2005. My interests include hunting, fishing, football and weekends. Controls, programming, and engines are my three technical interests. My work at the Engines Lab has most recently been with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in exhaust aftertreatment.
